‘What We HeART’ is a monthly curated collection of awesome and inspiring things, ideas, and happenings from the world of animal welfare.
Can you believe it’s August?! Us, either, but we sure are excited about the approaching season of crunchy leaves and comfy outdoor temperatures. To celebrate, here’s what’s tickling our fancy this month:
MORALE BOOSTS ON A BUDGET
We really love this ingenious little article by the fabulous folks at Animal Sheltering Magazine on how to increase employee engagement and boost morale —all while sticking to a tight budget. Shelter work has many ups and downs, but giving employees a boost now and again and thanking them for their service goes a long way towards increasing all the good feels!
PODCASTS AND COLORING
The HeARTs Speak staff is unabashedly addicted to podcasts of all kinds, so when we recently discovered that one of our favorites, Invisibilia, has coloring pages to accompany each episode…well, we were pretty psyched! What’s your current podcast obsession? Do you listen at work, leave it on for the shelter animals, find your zen while driving, or focus on a story or interview while you create art? Tell us in the comments!

FEE-WAIVED ADOPTIONS
Clear the Shelters Day was last month, but the success of that cross-country event still has us smiling! Check our recent blog on how to craft responses to questions from the community to help celebrate the success of these events and let go of fear!
CROSS-COUNTRY CUDDLES
There’s nothing we love more than animal shelters who are finding creative ways to reach out to their community and build new connections. Santa Barbara County Animal Services get our vote for creativity and fun this month!
DOGSTER
A magazine that promotes adoption, believes every dog (and cat) is a “who” not an “it”, and a place to go for vet info AND pet humor?! We’re in! Plus, the Dogster folks were kind enough to rave about HeARTs Speak’s artist members recently, and well, we think they’re pretty special too!
CREATIVE CALENDARS
It’s never too early to get a jump on 2017, and these two calendars, a collaboration between St. Louis County Pet Adoption Center, the St. Louis County Police, and the amazing talent Lynn Terry Photography, have us ready to fast-forward to January!
